For generations, the fertile lakes and wetlands of Bihar, especially in the Mithila region, have been home to the unique Phool Makhana. Known for their exceptional quality, taste and nutrition, Bihar's makhana has nourished families for centuries and is now loved across the world.
Makhana is grown in natural water bodies (tals) of Bihar, where it thrives in clean, still water.
The makhana plant (Euryale ferox) produces beautiful purple flowers in the monsoon season.
After flowering, spiny round fruits develop under water. These fruits contain hard seeds (makhana).
Farmers manually harvest the mature fruits from the lake using traditional methods.
The harvested fruits are collected. Each fruit contains multiple hard seeds inside.
The outer shell is removed to extract the hard makhana seeds.
The seeds are washed, cleaned and sun-dried to reduce moisture.
The dried seeds are roasted at high temperature. The hard shell pops open to give white makhana.
The popped makhana is sorted and graded by size and quality for the best taste and nutrition.
Finally, the makhana is hygienically packed and prepared for homes across India and the world.
